Empowering Voices And Choices

Welcome to the heart of MANT’s commitment to change – the Community Media wing.

Nestled in the serene hills and forests, our mission is clear: to give voice to those living in remote and marginalised space, far from places where decisions on their lives are being made.

Imagine that even after 70 years, most tribal communities still lack access to information through TV and radio.

We call these areas ‘media dark’. Only 0.25 percent of newspapers are published in tribal and indigenous languages, despite comprising 8.6% of India’s population.!

This is where MANT has stepped in. We saw the gap and decided to fill it. Our community media arm believes in breaking barriers, ensuring tribal voices are heard, loud and clear. We support the operations of Nityananda Janavani 91.2FM, a radio station managed by entirely by the tribal community, which shares their stories, culture, and issues within their community and with the world. We also create documentaries to capture the essence of their lives.

But here’s something special. UNICEF supported Nityananda Janavani for 5 years, till 2015 which helped the radio station to stand on its own feet. We are now on a journey to self-sustainability, thanks to UNICEF’s support.

Vision

Empowering the Unheard, Preserving, and Enriching Communities

Aim

The Community Media wing of MANT aspires to create an inclusive media landscape that transcends barriers, giving a voice to tribal people and fostering social change through empowerment and recognition.

GOALS

1. Media Literacy: Bridge the Knowledge Gap
Objective: To train individuals in media-dark areas, particularly tribal communities, fostering media literacy and enabling them to navigate and contribute to the media landscape.

2. Ownership: Empower through Control
Objective: Facilitate media ownership among indigenous groups, ensuring control over their narratives and perspectives, thereby challenging the conventional media landscape.

3. Empowerment: Bridging the Digital Divide
Objective: Work towards reducing the digital divide by providing access to digital tools and platforms, and empowering tribal population to participate actively in the digital realm.

4. Recognition: Amplify Voices, Foster Social Justice
Objective: Give a platform to the unheard, recognizing and promoting localized efforts for social justice, integration, and change. Through various media forms, spotlight the work of individuals contributing to positive transformations.

5. Transmission and Dissemination: News for Marginalized Communities
Objective: Act as a conduit for information dissemination, providing news of relevance to tribal communities, ensuring that their concerns and stories are shared, heard, and understood.

Aligning with these objectives, MANT’s Community Media Unit envisions a future where media becomes a tool for empowerment, where every individual, regardless of their background, contributes to a richer, more inclusive narrative, fostering understanding and positive societal transformation.
